The City of Bend is well known for its many cycling races and events - professional cyclists understand the rules of the road and bicycle etiquette.

However, now that fuel costs are so high, more adults are starting to ride bicycles as alternate transportation and while they may have had bicycle safety training at some point during childhood, motorists who encounter unsafe, sometimes bizarre bicycle rider behavior, can attest that the "newbies" need some education.

One excellent resource is a single page brochure published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration entitled "Seven Smart Routes to Bicycle Safety for Adults."  It provides a review of many topics that all bicycle riders need to know, adult or child.

Click here to access the .pdf file which can be printed using Adobe Acrobat.  If you are a driver or pedestrian who encounters unsafe bicycle riders, you might want to have some copies to distribute to them - the classic sterotype is the rider with no helmet, in flipflops, who doesn't obey traffic signs, changes lanes without signaling and  generally disobeys the law.  With more riders on the roads, we all need to be more alert and responsible as we share the road.
